The only extra step for a repainting job would be pressure washing first, which would be done a day or two ahead of time to allow plenty of time for everything to dry.
In all cases, we prep the house. We have someone who can repair damage before we start our portion of the job, which begins with scraping off any old paint that’s hanging around. After scraping, we sand and paint. When necessary, we powerwash.
We prefer a satin finish on the exterior because it’s more resistant to the sun and has better washability. When you want to rinse off your house or you get dirt on it, or the rain starts with the algae stuff, it’s easier to clean up something with a sheen to it.
Timeline for Exterior Painting
In general, it takes two to six days for a project. If it’s board and batten, that can take the longest because there are strips that go up and down the whole side of the house, and we have to caulk every side of that before we can start. With lap siding, for example, you’re only caulking the corners and maybe around a window, which keeps those jobs on the shorter end of the average.
